Ecover

Ecover was actually founded in 1980 by a Belgian, Frans Bogaert, who had a vision to create a phosphate free washing powder. At the time, rivers were foaming and fish were dying – and phosphates in laundry products were rightly seen as a major contributor to this. Frans achieved his phosphate-free laundry powder and dishwashing agent, but didn’t have much knowledge about how to take a product to market. He always had a vision to make the products in an ecological factory but didn’t really have the business acumen to make this a reality. The core of our business has remained true to this original vision, but over the years we’ve embraced performance as well as ecological credentials.

In terms of our commitment to the environment, we believe that it’s second to none. We now have 2 ecological factories in France and Belgium with many environmental features: from the energy efficient mixing tanks (a pioneering use of gears means the mixers use the equivalent of a household appliance in terms of energy to stir 20,000 litres of liquid product) to the insulating ‘green roofs (planted with sedum, the roof provides a thermal and acoustic insulating layer so we don’t need central heating or air con year round). Check out our website for more examples here.

Minerals and Mineral derivatives – sand, lime, zeolite and silicate

Ecover uses plant raw materials such as herbs, starch and wood fibres (cellulose), rapeseed, palm and coconut oil, and essential oils from, for example, orange peel and other plants. These raw materials are either used directly or after they have been processed to ensure full use of the cleansing power of nature. During processing we try and remain as closely to the original raw material as possible. We call this soft chemistry. Apart from plant ingredients, we also use minerals and mineral derivatives, such as sand, lime, zeolite and silicate. These minerals are found naturally in enormous quantities (for example, 75% of the earth’s crust consists of silicate). There is no danger of depletion and permanent damage to ecosystems during extraction of these minerals. However the extraction of petroleum, for example, is damaging and reserves are being depleted beyond repair.
